The Strabrechtse Heide

The Strabrechtse Heide nature reserve is one of the largest heathlands in the Netherlands and offers a varied landscape of forest and heath with idyllic fens. Het Beuven is the largest fen in the Netherlands. In the dry places there is shrub heather and juniper, in the wet places there are heath, pipe straw, gale and bell gentian. The grassification of the heath is prevented by grazing by a flock of sheep, by mowing and by sowing. The heath is surrounded by forests. The vastness of the area makes it wonderfully peaceful for walking and cycling.

The Beuven (pronounced: Beu-ven) is the largest fen (approx. 85 ha) on the Strabrechtse Heide and the largest fen in the Netherlands. Beuven is known for being exceptionally rich in birds and is also famous for its special vegetation.

The beautiful Witven was created naturally. During the Ice Age, the so-called cover sand was created here. This sand was transported by the wind during that period and in many places in the Netherlands it is still on the surface. At a later stage, this cover sand was locally blown up, forming bowls and drifting or cover sand ridges. When the groundwater rose, these bowls filled up. The Witven originated in such a bowl.
